I am sure you all have noticed that the price of gasoline has been slowly creeping back up and while it is still much cheaper than the high prices of a year and a half ago it is probably a good time to start taking steps to maximize your fuel economy.
Here is a real simple step anyone can do to save fuel. If you are carrying around extra weight in the trunk of your car get rid of it. Reducing the weight carried by your car by 50 lbs can save 1% in fuel. Another step driver can take advantage of is planning your trips more efficiently. This does not change your vehicles actually fuel efficiency but it does save fuel by making your trips in the car more efficient. If you have to run several airons at one end of town try to do them all on the same day. Then go to the other end of town the next day if possible. This way your not driving back and forth a cross town each day
The Care Care Council has five steps to car owners maximize their fuel economy
- Check Tire Pressure: Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent.
- Use the Right Motor Oil: Improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer.
- Replace Clogged Air Filters: Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles.
- Check Engine Performance: Keep your engine running efficiently and improve gas mileage by an average of 4 percent.
- Fix It: Addressing a serious maintenance problem, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent, according to www.fueleconomy.gov.
